Tips for Getting Started
Be Honest About Your Experience
Transparency builds trust faster than anything else.
Some customers actually prefer hiring someone affordable over paying top dollar for a licensed contractor. If you're just getting started, that's okay — own it. Price yourself honestly and set clear expectations about what you can and can't do.
When customers know what to expect, they're more likely to leave positive reviews. Overpromising and underdelivering is the fastest way to tank your reputation. Be upfront about your experience level and let your work speak for itself.
Build Your Portfolio and Reviews Over Time
Your first few jobs matter the most.
Upload before-and-after photos to your profile for every job you complete. Visual proof of your work is the single most effective way to win new clients.
Your first 3-5 reviews are the most important ones you'll ever get. They set the tone for your entire profile. Consider pricing aggressively early on to build momentum — a few lower-margin jobs that result in great reviews will pay for themselves many times over.
When and How to Raise Your Rates
Let your reputation justify your pricing.
After about 5 completed jobs with good reviews, you've earned the credibility to move up a rate tier. Customers can see your track record, so a higher price backed by great reviews is an easy sell.
Use the bidding system to test new prices. If you're consistently winning bids at your current rate, it might be time to go higher. If bids stop getting accepted, you'll know you've found your ceiling — for now.
Tax Records and Invoicing — Handled
Less paperwork, more work.
Every job completed through Omaha Repair Hub generates an invoice automatically. These platform invoices serve as income records you can use at tax time — no need to chase down receipts or build your own spreadsheets.
Payments go through Stripe's secure escrow system, which means clean, traceable deposits into your account. No cash confusion, no bounced checks.
Tip: Open a separate checking account for your service income. It makes bookkeeping and tax filing much simpler when your business money is in one place.
The New Entrepreneur Badge
A signal that you're new — and that's a good thing.
Providers can enable the New Entrepreneur badge on their profile and listings. Just toggle it on in your profile settings under Service Provider Settings.
For job posters, this badge is an invitation to support someone building their business. Many customers specifically look for new providers because they often offer lower rates, extra attention to detail, and the kind of hustle that comes from wanting to earn great reviews early on.
You can turn the badge on or off anytime from your profile settings.
Ready to Make It Official?
You can start earning right away without any of this. But when you're ready to take the next step, here's what to know.
Form an LLC
Protect your personal assets as your business grows.
An LLC (Limited Liability Company) separates your personal finances from your business. If something goes wrong on a job, your personal savings, home, and car are protected. In Nebraska, forming an LLC costs around $100 and can be done online.
You don't need an LLC to start working. Many people do their first several jobs as a sole proprietor and form an LLC later when the income justifies it. But it's worth doing sooner rather than later if you plan to make this a real business.

Licenses & Permits
Some trades require them, many don't.
Most basic services like lawn care, junk removal, painting, and general handyman work do not require a license in Nebraska. You can start these businesses immediately.
Trades like electrical, plumbing, and HVAC do require licensing. If you're skilled in a licensed trade, getting properly licensed makes you more competitive and lets you display a Licensed badge on your Omaha Repair Hub profile.
The City of Omaha may also require a general business license depending on what you do. Check with them to be sure.

Business Insurance
Protect yourself if something goes wrong on a job.
General liability insurance protects you if you accidentally damage someone's property or someone gets hurt because of your work. Policies for small service businesses can start as low as $30-50/month.
You don't need insurance to get started, but it becomes more important as you take on bigger jobs. Some customers will specifically ask if you're insured, so having coverage can help you win more bids.
Where to look:
- - Next Insurance, Thimble, or Hiscox for quick online quotes
- - Your local insurance agent can often bundle with existing policies
Self-Employment Taxes
What you need to know so you're not surprised at tax time.
When you work for yourself, you're responsible for paying self-employment tax (Social Security + Medicare) on top of regular income tax. This is about 15.3% of your net earnings. The good news: you can deduct business expenses like gas, tools, supplies, and even a portion of your phone bill.
If you expect to owe more than $1,000 in taxes for the year, the IRS wants you to make quarterly estimated payments. This avoids a big surprise bill in April.
Omaha Repair Hub tracks all your invoices and payments in one place, which makes tax time much easier. Download your records at the end of the year and hand them to your tax preparer — or use them with free tools like IRS Free File.
